On December 11, 2008, the Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI) released the 2007-08 Hospital Standardized Mortality Ratio (HSMR) results for eligible hospitals, Local Health Integration Networks (LHINs) and Regional Health Authorities across Canada (excluding Quebec).

The Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI) has calculated the HSMR for eligible acute care hospitals in Canada (excluding Quebec). HSMR is a “Big Dot” indicator and measurement tool that compares a hospitals’ mortality rate with the overall average rate. It has been used by hospitals in many jurisdictions to assess and analyze mortality, and to identify areas for improvement.

CIHI has made HSMR results public only for “eligible” hospitals – those that meet a statistical threshold for public reporting of at least 2,500 HSMR cases in each of the four years being reported.   CIHI has not...
